MANNA House Emergency Food Bank

MANNA House Food Bank December Focus is Canned Milk, dry milk and macaroni & cheese. Special offerings for Manna House may be made using the special envelopes in the pew racks.

Each month we focus on a particular need for the Manna House emergency food bank, but donations of any kind are always accepted. Collection bins are located both upstairs and downstairs for your convenience. The dropoff boxes are located in the hallway in the Fellowship Hall and in the Narthex. Your gifts of prayer, time and food items are always appreciated.

Backpack Ministry 2019-2020

This will provide weekend food for 10 students at Boundary Street Elementary School for 36 weeks of the school year. This is the 6th year we will sponsor this ministry to feed some community children who might otherwise be without sufficient food over the weekend.

Donations are now being accepted. This will be an ongoing project through May 2020. Check should be made to SMLC Backpack Ministry. You may also give through your regular offering envelope marking it as Backpack Ministry.

Other projects and ongoing activities from last year (2018) included:

  • Used phones that can be programmed for emergency use were collected for sister care and delivered to our Newberry source.
  • Used optical glasses were collected and delivered to our source at the Lion’s club.
  • Baby hats were knitted for Newberry County hospital.
  • Twenty backpacks were assembled for Boundary Street Elementary school each week. We pay for ten backpacks, and harvest hope matches our contributions.
  • Undesignated Girl Scout cookies were delivered to veterans in Whitmire.
  • A meal was served to the Newberry High School football team before a home game. Members of the congregation donated money for food, prepared food, and/or served the meal.
  • Fifteen boxes for Samaritan’s Purse were delivered to the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer for shipping. Thanks to the Girl Scout troop for helping pack donated items.
  • Each month specific items for Manna House have been requested. Four times during the year members of the congregation volunteered to pack food for registered individuals.
  • Twelve baskets for International Students at Newberry College were collected and delivered to the college before the students arrived. Each laundry basket included a set of sheets, bath towel and washcloth, and personal items.
  • Money and items were donated for our Lutheran World Relief Project. The following were shipped: 10 fabric kits, 13 school supply kits , and 26 personal care kits.
  • We encourage the congregation to donate to Souper Bowl Sunday, the water project, and to choose a name from the Christmas tree at Wendy's.
