Our Safety Committee is actually fairly new. Their work involves being prepared for emergencies and putting preventative measures in place. This covers accounting for what to do in medical emergencies, weather/disaster related emergencies, and putting policy and procedure in place for emergency preparedness and accident prevention.
· Updating smoke detectors throughout the church facilities.
· Ensuring that fire extinguishers are well placed and maintained throughout the building.
· Keeping up first aid boxes and an AED in the building.
· Having procedure in place in case of fire, health emergency or active shooter situation.
· Knowing how to prepare for adverse weather and knowing what to do in case extreme storms should strike.
· Outlining and implementing a child and youth protection policy.
These are just some of the tasks that the safety team must work on and requires expertise in a number of areas. While no one likes to think that an emergency could happen, it’s the Safety Committee’s job to determine what should be done in such an event.
We want our church to be a safe space to gather regardless of the occasion or the people who come to our space. That is accomplished if we have a dedicated group of people who diligently keep the safety of our community in view.
If you would like to get involved or just learn more about the safety procedures here at Summer, you can reach out to Steve or Garrett. Even becoming aware of what we do to prevent accidents and address emergencies helps us all to make our church a safer place.
